Urban Owl Diets
Research on urban owl diet in the greater Seattle area
This has been my first entirely self-initiated and led research project. A publication is in process.
After finding too many vomitoriums (heavy owl pellet, or regurgitation, sites) to ignore, I collected over 600 barred owl pellets from 3 sites across the greater Seattle area. I then dissected and identified all prey items using skeletal samples from the Burke Museum.
My research has implications for rodent populations and density and the dangers of rodenticide for predatory owls.
This project led to the creation of my own business, The Artful Biologist, in 2023. The art I sell through my business includes many items created from cleaned and sealed owl pellet bones. Visit the "The Artful Biologist" tab to learn more.
This research has also led to community outreach across a variety of local organizations from interested parties.
